New 4D Technology Comes to Parkland (March 2006)

4D Ultrasound is now available at Parkland Medical Center enabling patients and physicians the ability to view live three-dimensional images that offer improved clarity and several diagnostic benefits. “Ultrasound is a safe non-invasive way to see inside the human body,” says Ray Wilburn, Director of Radiology. “With the introduction of this advanced technology, we are enhancing imaging capabilities in all areas of ultrasound here at Parkland and our Outpatient Centers in Derry and Salem.”

Prenatal ultrasound has been used for several years as a diagnostic tool. It has been the best way for physicians, sonographers, and expectant parents to view physical features and internal organs within the body of the baby. “Parkland’s new 4D technology adds to the excitement and anticipation of seeing what their baby really looks like long before the baby is born,” Wilburn explains. “In some cases, depending on the position of the baby, parents can actually see the definition of the baby’s hands and facial expressions,” he adds.

The images provided by 4D technology offer physicians and sonographers increased visibility of an unborn baby’s blood flow and organ development. “A sonographer can better distinguish a definitive diagnosis and determine whether there are medical concerns or physical deformities,” says Wilburn. “4D imaging provides the opportunity to better analyze potential development and/or medical complications.” Along with benefiting prenatal ultrasounds, this advanced technology improves all areas of ultrasound imaging. The 4D ultrasound is used to view areas of the body including the abdomen, head, and neck to detect potential medical concerns. “The 4D technology is utilized in specialty areas such as gynecology, mammography, urology and vascular services,” Wilburn explains. “The 4D ultrasound is not only advancement for prenatal ultrasound, but imaging in all areas of medicine.”
